Each year when we attend spooky parties around October 31 and find our costume to be ‘not good enough,’ we pledge to do it right next year, for sure. However, we only start ‘freaking out’ about our costume when Halloween is less than a week away! Welcome to the club of “freaked out costume hunters. Whether you belong to the elaborate costume category or the somehow manage kind of party goer, Halloween presents a challenge at this level each year.
The most classy and time-tested Halloween costume for eons has been the Mary Poppins outfit. All you need is a long navy coat, red stripe scarf, and, of course, an umbrella. This will also be useful in case it rains or drizzles on October 31. In case you want to keep warm in royal style, mimic Kate Middleton’s classic coats, as she is literally the queen of outerwear. Make sure your coat has peter pan collars or double-breasted button designs. But if you prefer the younger royal Prince Harry’s wife, Megan Markle’s style, you would want to don her engagement photo call outfit. This can be re-created quite simply by wearing a whitish trench coat on a green dress and pairing it with beige lace-up heels.
Oh, and by the way, for those of you who are wondering what the fuss is all about, we are just stressing over the originally Pagan festival called “Samhain,” meaning “end of summer”. The Celts believed that on the eve of Halloween, dead spirits would visit the mortal world. They lit bonfires to keep evil spirits away and dressed in guises. If the spirits were wandering the earth and happened to run into one of the Celts, they would be misled to believe that they were spirits themselves and let them go. This is where the idea of “dressing up” took root.
In addition to kids going “trick or treating,” in which they ask neighbours and friends for treats (mainly candies), there are many games that are played on Halloween night, including snap apple or bobbing for apples. In this game, an apple is suspended from a string and the children are blindfolded. Also, their arms tied behind their backs. The first child to get a decent bit of the apple gets a prize. Bobbing for apples is when some apples are dropped into a basin of water and the children must go in head first and try to get a bite. The apples are associated with love and fertility. It is believed that whoever gets the first bite will be the first to marry.
Whatever your plans, enjoy Halloween to the hilt. But remember, don’t drive if you have been drinking or using drugs. Afterall, there is nothing scarier than a serious automobile crash under the influence; and no costume, however much cute or trendy will come in handy if you are involved in one.
